Design Philosophy

All models are engineered by a proven design philosophy that is based on:

  • Certification under the rules of leading Classification Society’s (ABS, BV, DNV, GL, LRS, RINA)
  • High efficiency with the smallest possible tunnel diameter;
  • Heavy duty bearings. The bearings are designed to meet class requirements and exceed a lifetime of 30.000 hours;
  • Heavy duty gears. Spiral bevel gears are used for very smooth running and high efficiency;
  • Low propeller tip speed. Propellers are designed at a tip speed of 30 m/s to minimize noise and maximize the comfort level on board;
  • Easy maintenance due to the modular design;

Thrusters

Thrusters have become an essential addition for maneuvering today's maritime vessels. To provide thrust in all directions we supply GME-branded thrusters suitable for Yachts and Commercial Vessels in three different models:

thruster, tunnel thruster, azimuth thruster, retractable thruster, stern thruster, bow thruster

Tunnel.pngTunnel thrustersA bow thruster or stern thruster mounted in transverse direction of the hull. We can supply electric motor driven, hydraulic motor driven and diesel engine driven tunnel thrusters from 15kW to 1300kW. The tunnel structures can be executed in steel, aluminium and FRP depending on vessel hull material. A full plug & play electric driven package consists of a tunnel thruster with electro motor, frequency drive with programmed factory settings and a main control panel with proportional joystick for stepless control. Interface for full integration with dynamic positioning systems is optional.


 
Retract.pngRetractable thrustersA thru-hull tunnel thruster which can be retracted into the hull after duty. We can supply electric driven and hydraulic driven retractable thruster from 20kW to 1000kW. The motor travels up and down with the thruster, so the drive line is never disconnected. Depending on the vessel hull material the thrusters can be supplied in aluminium or in steel construction, depending on vessel hull material. A full plug & play hydraulic driven package consists of a retractable thruster with hydraulic motor, closed system hydraulic power pack with proportional valve control and a main control panel with proportional joystick for stepless control.


 
Azimuth.pngAzimuth thrustersA 360 degrees rotatable thruster that is often used for main propulsion. They are available from 150kW to 1300kW. GME uses fixed pitch propellers in open wheel configuration or with nozzles. Every configuration can be optimized for vessel speed or for maximum bollard thrust. Azimuth thrusters are available in Z-drive configuration with direct diesel engine drive or in L-drive configuration for electric motor or hydraulic motor drive. The control system comes with an interface for the Auto pilot system. An interface for Dynamic positioning systems is optional.
Azimuth thrusters can replace conventional propulsion and rudder steering systems to perform both the propulsion and steering functions. When enhanced maneuverability is required in applications such as dynamic positioning, ship escort and ship docking services.
